She has always looked up to him. Now she begins to see herself
Shanghai, 1933. In Xujiahui, Shen Jingyi has built her days around her architect husband, Xu Shaoheng. A question at a party leaves her wondering how to introduce herself beyond being his wife. Venturing out, she begins learning woodcarving in a workshop near Tushanwan. From her first hesitant cuts to observing people in the streets and making work of her own, she gradually finds a voice—and a name—to call her own. Along the way, she and her husband begin to see each other anew.
